Gunpowder_Plot_conspirators

Guy Fawkes Night is an event celebrated in Britain on the 5th of November.

In 1605 a group of men plotted to kill the King of England using gunpowder. The person in charge of guarding the gunpowder was called Guy Fawkes.

Early in the morning of the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes was caught with the gunpowder and arrested. At their trial on 27 January 1606, eight of the group, including Fawkes, were sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered. On the 31st of January Fawkes and the other men were executed. Luckily for Fawkes, he jumped from the stage just before his execution and broke his neck, thus avoiding a more painful death.

Every year in Britain on the 5th of November many towns and villages have a fireworks display to remember this day. There is usually a large bonfire in the middle of the town. People gather at it to watch the fireworks. A “guy”, a doll dressed like Guy Fawkes, is put on the bonfire and burnt.

“I want to challenge the TOEIC exam.”

「To challenge」

I challenged him to an arm wrestle.
She challenged him to a race.

He challenged the courts decision.
He challenged conventional thinking.

I want a job that challenges me.

「I want to challenge the TOEIC exam」このTOEICテストが本当に良いかどうかを確かめたいという表現。

“I want to try the TOEIC exam.”

QUIZ:

1). I (challenge / try) you to an eating contest!
2). She wants to (challenge / try) something new.
3). They (challenged / tried) traditional family values.
4). Next year I’m going to (challenge / attempt) a full marathon.
5). The teacher (challenged / attempted) me to prove my idea.
6). He insulted my girlfriend so I (challenged / tried) him to a fight.
7). Hatoyama (challenged /tried) Kan’s decision to stay as Prime
Minister.

*Serves 4-5 as a salad; about 15 as an appetizer

Ingredients:

  • 1 watermelon, seedless and small to medium size
  • 1 block of fresh feta cheese
  • 1 bunch of fresh mint leaves
  • 1 cup of balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • *Skewers, if for an appetizer
  • *Baby arrugula, if for a salad
Instructions:
  1. Cut the watermelon into 2×2 cm, bite size cubes for an appetizer; (if for a salad cut into 10x10cm cubes)
  2. Do the same with the feta, careful not to break it.
  3. Separate the mint leaves from their stems, wash and dry.
  4. Put the balsamic and brown sugar into a small saucepan over medium heat; stir it occasionally but be careful it does not burn. Once it starts to bubble, stir constantly and when the amount has reduced to about a 1/3 take it off the heat.
  5. Assemble the watermelon, feta and mint leaves alternating each on the skewer. Finish by drizzling the balsamic over each skewer. Serve cool and fresh.
**If for a salad, put the freshly washed and dried baby arugula in the center of the plate, a small amount per plate, then stack the watermelon and feta 4 high (2 squares watermelon, 2 squares feta) layering the mint leaves in between each layer, drizzle with the balsamic reduction and serve.
